Create Category Templates to Auto-Map TikTok Shop Products

TIKTOK SHOP INTEGRATION

Category Templates in TikTok Shop Connector by SPL let you save a category mapping once and reuse it. Set up the mapping for a group of products, tick "Save your selection as a template for future use", name it, and every new product in those categories can be mapped and synced with a single dropdown selection instead of manual work.

Before any product can be listed on TikTok Shop, it has to be mapped to the correct TikTok category. You can do that by hand, one product at a time or in bulk, but if you add products regularly that becomes a repetitive job you are doing again and again for the same handful of categories.

Templates fix that. You do the mapping work once, save the attributes and documents alongside it, and reuse the whole setup whenever you add products. This guide walks through creating a template and applying it.

Store not connected yet? Category mapping only comes into play once your Shopify store is linked to TikTok Shop and your catalogue is available to sync. Start with connecting your Shopify products with TikTok Shop using SPL, then come back here.

Watch: Creating and using category templates

Here is the whole process on screen, from opening Product Mapping through to reusing a saved template. The written steps below go into more detail on each field.

What category templates do

The Product Mapping feature in TikTok Shop Connector by SPL organises and syncs listings between your Shopify store and TikTok Shop. Once your store is connected, products have to be mapped to the correct TikTok Shop categories before they can be listed for sale, and that can be done manually, either individually or in bulk.

Category Templates automate that step. You set up rules that assign your Shopify categories to the right TikTok Shop categories, along with the attributes and documents those categories require. From then on, new products in those categories are mapped and synced without manual updates.

Manual mapping Category templates
Effort per new product Repeat the full mapping and attributes each time Pick a template from a dropdown
Attributes and documents Re-entered and re-uploaded every time Saved with the template
Consistency Depends on whoever does the mapping Identical every time it is applied
Best suited to Small or one-off catalogues Many products across few categories
Who benefits most: merchants with a large number of products but only a few categories. If you sell 500 items that all fall into three or four TikTok categories, a template turns a recurring chore into a single click.

Step 1: Open the Product Mapping section

Open the SPL Dashboard and click Products from the menu.

Select Choose Products in the Specified Categories to map products only within selected categories, then click sync to TikTok.

Step 2: Select your categories

Click Select Categories, then choose the relevant ecommerce platform category or categories from the dropdown. You can also search by name if your catalogue has a long category list.

Step 3: Fill in the TikTok Shop attributes

Every TikTok Shop category has its own attributes that must be completed before products in it will sync. The required fields are listed by default, so work through them and fill each one in.

Upload any certificates or documents the category requires. This is where the time saving really adds up, because those documents are stored with the template rather than re-uploaded for every product.

Worth knowing: if a category needs certificates or approval you do not have yet, products mapped to it will not publish even though the mapping itself worked. Some categories are restricted or invite-only, so check the requirements before you build a template around them.

Step 4: Save your selection as a template

At the bottom of the page, tick "Save your selection as a template for future use?".

Enter a template name and click Save Template. Give it a name that describes the category it covers rather than something generic, since you will be picking it from a dropdown later.

Step 5: Use a saved template

When you next map products, choose your template from the Select Template dropdown at the top. The saved settings apply automatically, so the category mapping, attributes and documents are all filled in for you.

That is the whole point of templates. Every new product in the selected categories gets mapped and synced to TikTok Shop with almost no effort on your part.

Template tips

Name templates after the category they cover, not "Template 1", so the dropdown stays usable
Build one template per TikTok category rather than one giant catch-all
Check the category is not restricted or invite-only before investing time in a template for it
Fill every required attribute, since a missing field is the usual reason a mapped product will not sync
Review your templates occasionally, because TikTok Shop changes category requirements over time

Category template FAQs

My products are mapped but still will not sync to TikTok Shop. Why?

Mapping is only half the job. Each TikTok Shop category has required attributes, and if any of them are blank the product will not sync even though the category is correctly assigned. Check that every required field in your template is filled and that any certificates the category asks for have been uploaded. If the category is restricted or invite-only, you will also need approval before products can publish, regardless of how the mapping is set up.

Do I have to map products before they can be listed?

Yes. Once your Shopify store is connected, products must be mapped to the correct TikTok Shop categories before they can be listed for sale. You can do it manually, individually or in bulk, or set up templates so it happens automatically for the categories you sell in.

Can I create more than one category template?

Yes, and you generally should. Build a separate template for each TikTok Shop category you sell in, since each has its own attributes and document requirements. You then pick the right one from the Select Template dropdown when mapping new products.

Are templates worth it for a small catalogue?

If you have only a handful of products and rarely add more, manual mapping is fine. Templates pay off when you have a large number of products spread across a small number of categories, or when you add new products regularly, because that is where the repetition becomes costly.

Do certificates and documents get saved in the template too?

Yes. Any documents you upload while setting up the mapping are stored with the template, so you are not re-uploading the same certificate for every product in that category. This is often the biggest single time saving, particularly in categories with strict documentation requirements.

What happens if TikTok Shop changes a category's requirements?

Your template keeps the settings you saved, so if TikTok adds a new required attribute, products using that template can start failing to sync. It is worth reviewing your templates every so often, and particularly if products in one category suddenly stop publishing while others are fine.

Can I still map products manually if I use templates?

Yes. Templates are a shortcut, not a replacement. You can still map products individually or in bulk whenever a product does not fit an existing template, or when you want to set different attributes for a particular item.
